March, 2008
Synandra, Guyandotte Beauty
Synandra hispidula

This beautiful member of the mint family is found in rich
mesic woods in Middle and East Tennessee blooming in
late spring.  The flowers are among the largest of our native
mints at 1.5 inches long on plants that can reach 2 feet in
height.  This species isn't considered rare in Tennessee,
yet it isn't commonly encountered except in older, less
disturbed woodlands as it is less tolerant of sun exposure
that can result from selective cutting or natural openings in
the canopy.  This is the only member of the genus
Synandra  and is an endemic plant of the Ohio Valley.
