Crossvine
Bignonia capreolata

A woody vine that climbs trees or rock faces by tendrils to heights of up to 50 feet.  The leaves are
pinnately compound with the lower two leaflets oval to lanceolate in shape, 2-6 inches long, with the
other leaflets modified into a terminal, branched tendril.  The plants are evergreen except in the
harshest winters and bloom in mid-spring with beautiful tubular flowers that are maroon on the
outside and bright yellow inward with 5 flaring lobes.  The throat is also blushed with maroon.  This
species can be found in open woods in varying moisture conditions.
The common name is derived from the cross that can be seen when stems are viewed in
cross-section.
